An Instagram Live is a real-time broadcast that viewers watch as it happens and that is deleted when it ends. A story is a pre-recorded photo or video clip that stays visible for 24 hours. Lives can run for hours; stories are capped at 60 seconds per clip. Both disappear, on different timers.
How long each one lasts
A live exists only while it is being broadcast. When it ends it is deleted, unless the creator shares a replay, which then lasts 30 days.
A story lasts 24 hours from posting, then moves to the creator's private archive. Adding it to a Highlight keeps it public indefinitely.
How they are used differently
Lives are used for interaction: Q&As, announcements, co-hosted broadcasts, and anything where viewer comments in real time are the point.
Stories are used for frequency, quick daily updates posted several times a day, often with polls, stickers and links.
How the archive treats each
